Proactive Medicine - What is it?

Proactive medicine is simply another term for preventative medicine. Proactive medicine aims to prevent diseases and various health problems from occurring before they manifest. As such it is really part of alternative or traditional medicine as the orthodox medical approach is far from proactive and usually is only of use once a condition has become established and is causing symptoms which can be diagnosed and identified to be a particular health condition or disease.

Proactive medicine on the other hand aims to maintain homeostasis. That is, it aims to maintain health on the physical, mental and emotional levels. The principle behind proactive medicine is prevention is better than cure. In traditional Chinese medicine, for example, patients used to visit their doctors while they were well and healthy and they paid the doctor for his/her services, however, if a patient became ill the treatments were free. The assumption being that the doctor did not do his/her job properly and therefore the patient become ill. Luckily, this is no longer the case, even in China.

If one of the doctor's patients died, irrespective of the cause, the doctor was forced to hand a red lantern in his surgery and this would tell all his patients how many of the doctor’s patients had died. Boy, talk about having to be accountable.

Proactive medicine includes advising patients about diet, exercise, stress management and lifestyle choices. It also included the use of preventative forms of medicine, examples include: massage and aromatherapy treatments as well as Acupuncture, Chinese and western herbal medicine. Each of these forms of therapy or medicine acknowledges the fact, that there are ways to strengthen the body’s resistance to disease and maintain health and wellbeing.

The effects of massage for example, have been shown to work on a variety of levels. Physically, massage improves blood and lymph circulation, lowers blood pressure, improves immune and digestive system functioning and increases metabolism. Massage also speeds recovery time for athletes and others with injuries, as well as decreasing pain in many chronic conditions such as tension headaches, back problems and arthritis. Psychologically, massage calms the nervous system, decreases stress and boosts energy levels.

Aromatherapy, used as a proactive medicine, has similar effects to massage, with the additional benefit of the therapeutic properties contained in the essential oils.

In addition, Yoga and Tai Chi, both quite well known in the west these days, are forms of proactive medicine, as they aim to establish and maintain the energy balance of the body. Both these forms of ‘exercise’ are well documented in helping people to regain and maintain a good level of fitness, flexibility and overall health. They have been practiced for thousands of years in both India and China and have well and truly stood the test of time in terms of proving their effectiveness.

Both Tai Chi and Yoga improve overall fitness, balance, coordination, and agility. They have also been shown to lower blood pressure and heart rates, promote relaxation, and release stress and tension. People who practice Tai Chi or Yoga on a regular basis tend to have good posture, flexibility, and range of motion, are more mentally alert, and sleep more soundly at night.

Some other conditions positively affected by Tai Chi and Yoga include: Chronic pain and headaches, arthritis and osteoporosis, heart disease, depression and anxiety, high blood pressure, asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema, and many more. Tai Chi and Yoga thus perform a vital function as proactive medicines, with far-reaching benefits way beyond just physical fitness.

Similarly, the use of meditation and relaxation as proactive medicines are not to be underestimated. Generally speaking, meditation is an experience of relaxing the body, quieting the mind, and awakening the spirit. There are many types of meditation, and each has specific techniques and skills that can be learned. The benefits of meditation are, generally, quite extraordinary. For many people, the physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual benefits of meditation might include: higher levels of energy, creativity, and spontaneity; lower blood pressure; increased exercise tolerance; better concentration; decreased depression and anxiety; fewer cravings for alcohol and cigarettes; increased job satisfaction, and better relationships with others, just to mention a few.

In short, proactive medicine is the best approach to establish and maintain a healthy mind, body and spirit.

Spider Bites, Flea Bites, Mosquito Bites and Bee Stings

With Summer knocking on the door in the southern hemisphere, the insects are active and well, chances are you're going to get stung or bitten. This article will provide some helpful hints and tips as to treat these irritating bites and stings naturally.

Bites from some spiders and insects may require immediate medical attention. For example, the sting from the European Wasp and the Honey Bee can result in severe reactions and have been known to result in death. Similarly, some spiders in Australia such as the Sydney Funnel Web and the Red Back spiders have also been reported to be fatal, while bites from other have been known to cause serious health concerns and skin necrosis.

Apart from the very nasty critters that have too much poison for our good, most mosquito bites and similar stings are for the most part just very irritating and can be addressed with some very simple, yet potent essential oils. Spider bites for example can be treated by applying 2-3 drops of Basil oil onto a band aid and applying this to the bite. Replace the band-aid 2-3 times per day, Basil oil has been reported to be able to neutralise many toxins from spider bites and other insects.

In addition, some people may have a mild to moderately severe allergic reaction to bites from fleas or mosquitoes and again essential oils come to the rescue.

Lavender oils for example will sooth irritated skin very quickly and disinfect the area at the same time. Lavender is well known for it’s wound healing and antiseptic properties, which makes it an ideal first aid treatment from minor bites and stings. Similarly, Aloe vera gel will quickly sooth the irritated skin and help the healing process.

Citronella oil is a natural pyrethrin and thus is excellent in repelling insects. You can use it together with Pennyroyal on the coat of dogs and cats to keep fleas and flea bites to a minimum. WARNING - Do not use Pennyroyal on female dogs and cats if you are trying to bread them or if they are pregnant; Pennyroyal is a known abortifactant. You can also use an oil evaporator, you know, where you have a few drops of essential oils in a few millilitres of water in a small dish, which sits over a burning candle.

Tea tree oil - is a traditional Aboriginal remedy from Australia, which has become well known for its healing and antiseptic properties. Research has demonstrated that it acts on the micro-organisms that cause common skin infections such as acne, canker sores, herpes, insect bites and nail fungus.

If these first aid treatments do not seem to be of any help or symptoms get worse, you must consult a medical practitioner or go to hospital as soon as possible. Try to identify the insect or spider and if possible put it into a jar and take it with you. Many antivenins are specific to the particular poison and these work extremely well. If you can take the animal with you, the medical staff will be able to more easily identify it and prescribe the correct antivenin for you.

However, most bites are more or less harmless and you will get great relief from using essential oils and herbs like Aloe vera. Make sure you drink lots of fluids and rest until the symptoms have improved and you are feeling getter.

Echinacea Can It Really Treat The Immune System?

There are several different species of Echinacea commonly used in herbal medicine, namely: Echinacea angustifolia, Echinacea pallid and Echinacea purpurea. The common name Echinacea is "Purple coneflower".

These species do have differing effects, however all are used in various preparations found at health food stores and other outlets.

The biggest problem with the use of Echinacea is that not all Echinacea products are equally effective. Powdered versions of Echinacea are mostly not as effective as the liquid herbal extract, and fresh plant extracts are more effective than liquids made from dried plant material.

The biggest problem with the use of Echinacea is that not all Echinacea products are equally effective. Powdered versions of Echinacea are mostly not as effective as the liquid herbal extract, and fresh plant extracts are more effective than liquids made from dried plant material.

In addition, Echinacea plants grown in some parts of the world are not as high in some of its constituents because of the nutrient levels of the ground in which the plants are grown and the altitude at which the Echinacea plants are grown.

Add to this the type of preparation the ground undergoes before the seeds are planted, the quality of the seed that are being planted and the processing of the plant after harvesting and you have one mixed bag. Is it any wonder that different researchers come up with differing results as to the efficacy of Echinacea?

Ok, so let's look at the ideal. Firstly, the ground in which the seeds are planted should be prepared in accordance to growing organically certified plants. That translates into major efforts by a company to prepare the ground, make sure there is no run-on from neighbouring properties, there is natural control of weeds and pests and no risk of contamination of the grown through fall-out pollution. That's a big ask anywhere in the world these days.

The next factor is the quality of seed that is planted into the soil. Is the seed stock from a reliable source? Are the seeds of good quality, and so on?

So you have high quality seeds in well prepared soil and the plants will receive certified organic status. Great, but what about the preparation of the herbal extract? Are the plants harvested and then dried, or are they processed as fresh plants? The difference in the case of Echinacea is quite considerable and fresh plant extracts will work much better than most dried versions (there are possibly 2 exceptions).

As an herbalist, I prefer to use the fresh plant extract manufactured by Bioforce AG. This company was founded by Dr. h.c. A. Vogel and has been making a product called Echinaforce for 50 years. It is totally organic, uses the fresh plant which is processed within 24 hours of harvesting and its products have been scrutinized by some of the worlds most reputable research laboratories in Germany, Switzerland and the US. The methodology that Bioforce AG uses to produce their herbal extracts is second to none and stands as an example to the rest of the herbal manufacturers.

Recently, the company financed a study, into the effect of Echinaforce on the immune system. The results of the study were published by the research organization in their Newsletter.

This study by a team of researchers under the guidance of Dr. Jürg Gertsch from the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences ETH (Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule) in Zürich, Switzerland, succeeded in demonstrating the effect mechanism of echinacea on cells of the immune system, at the molecular biological level. This current research has roused interest in specialist circles, not least because a number of other research institutes are also working on the effect of Echinacea.

The evidence was provided with an in vitro experiment. To start with, cells from human blood were cultivated, which were then mixed in a test-tube with liquid extract from Echinacea purpurea. Gertsch: "Following that, an infection was simulated and then examined to determine what effect the fresh plant tincture and finally individual substances had on the genes in the immune cells. We saw that the cells produce special proteins that play an important role in the human immune system."

The team also discovered that-for the main part-the amazing effect is produced primarily by one of the compounds that are released from the Echinacea plant, so-called alkamides. These substances are structurally similar to the endocannbinoides produced in our bodies.

In various steps and using computer models the team showed that specific surface structures of the immune system, (so-called receptors) recognise the alkamides contained in the Echinaforce. When these alkamides connect to the receptors, a host of signals are triggered in the cell, which finally releases the observed tumor-necrose-factor alpha modulation (TNF-a).

According to Gertsch, one aspect is of particular interest; the alkamides bind to the cannabinoide receptor, the CB2 expressed on the immune cells, and the CB1, which mainly affects the brain and central nervous system. Work is continuing, within the framework of a PhD thesis, to obtain a more precise characterisation of these interactions.

This sounds like an ad for Echinaforce, well maybe so, however, I firmly belief this product is one of the very best, if not the best available on the market today. The only other Echinacea product that comes anywhere near Vogel's is made by a US company called Nutrilite.

Even though many ingredients and elements of Echinacea have been isolated and identified, it is not possible to ascribe the effectiveness clearly to a fixed substance. Among the best known active constituents of Echinacea are:

    • cichoric acid
    • alkylamides
    • coffeeaciderative
    • polysaccharide
    • glycoproteins
    • flavonoids
    • essential oil

Historical Use Of Echinacea

One of the most popular herbs in America today is the Native American medicinal plant known as Echinacea. The herb is named for the prickly scales in its large conical seed head, which resemble the spines of an angry hedgehog (echinos is Greek for hedgehog).

Results of archaeological digs indicate that Native Americans may have used Echinacea for over 400 years to treat infections and wounds and as a general "cure-all." Echinacea has also been used throughout history to treat scarlet fever, syphilis, malaria, blood poisoning, and diphtheria. Although this herb was popular during the 18th and 19th centuries, its use began to decline in the United States after the introduction of antibiotics. Echinacea preparations became increasingly popular in Germany throughout the 20th century - in fact, almost all of the scientific research on this herb has been conducted in this country.

Today, Echinacea is primarily used to reduce the symptoms and duration of the common cold and flu and to alleviate the symptoms associated with them, such as sore throat (pharyngitis), cough, and fever. Many herbalists also recommend Echinacea to help boost the activity of the immune system, treat skin disorders and to help the body fight infections.
Plant Description

Echinacea has tall stems, bears single flowers that are pink or purple, and has a central high cone that is usually purplish-brown in colour. The large cone is actually a seed head with sharp spines that resemble a stiff comb and has four-sided achenes.

It has a faint aromatic smell, with a sweetish taste, leaving a tingling sensation in the mouth not unlike Aconitum napellus, but without its lasting numbing effect.

General Uses

Several laboratory and animal studies suggest that Echinacea contains active substances that enhance the activity of the immune system, relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and have hormonal, antiviral, and antioxidant effects. For this reason, professional herbalists may also recommend Echinacea to treat urinary tract infections, vaginal yeast (Candida) infections, ear infections (also known as otitits media), athlete's foot, sinusitis, hay fever (also called allergic rhinitis), as well as slow-healing wounds.

Precautions

The use of herbs is a time-honoured approach to strengthening the body and treating disease. Herbs, however, contain active substances that can trigger side effects and interact with other herbs, supplements, or medications. For these reasons, herbs should be taken with care, under the supervision of a practitioner knowledgeable in the field of botanical medicine.

The American Herbal Products Association gives Echinacea a class 1 safety rating, which indicates that it is safe when used appropriately (as instructed by the product label) and with the guidance of a healthcare professional. In Germany, use of Echinacea is restricted to no longer than eight weeks at a time. This is because after eight consecutive weeks, Echinacea losses its effectiveness and may even diminish immune function. Regular users of this herb, need "break" periods - namely, periods of time that they are not taking Echinacea in order for it to maintain its ability to enhance immune function and fight infection.

'Twas the Night before Christmas'

by Clement Clarke Moore

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

In good health we wish you all a very Merry Christmas
