Welcome to the November issue of the Natural skin Care Newsletter

We hope you enjoyed taking advantage of our Celebration specials and grabbed yourselves a bargain.

This month we'll be talking about general health issues and considerations and while these do affect your skin, they affect your general health. We all need to breath and we need to drink water. Without clean air and good, pure drinking water our body will not stay healthy very long and we will become susceptible to disease and

Toxins in your Environment

About Indoor Air Pollution
What's in the water you drink?

There are certain assumptions we all make about the air we breath and the water we drink. I guess we believe that the air can't be too bad, especially outside of major cities and especially inside our homes. However, research tells us that air pollution inside our homes can be up to 10-times as high as outside - now that's reason for concern. Isn't it?

Another assumption we should all be correct in making, is that our tap water is safe to drink, not just in the short term, but throughout our lives.
Have you wondered why so many people are drinking bottled water more and more often? Maybe you drink bottled water and have done for some time - but should we have to? If so, why?

About Indoor Air Pollution

Increasingly indoor air pollution is being recognized as a health problem. Housing is becoming more and more energy efficient and as such when using heating or cooling equipment, doors and windows are almost hermetically sealed and little fresh air enters our dwellings. This article looks at some of the aspects of Indoor Air pollution and you may just get a surprise or two....

Indoor Air Pollution is now being recognized as a Serious Health Problem.
Indoor air pollution, in homes as well as commercial buildings, is being recognized as a serious health problem. Researchers have discovered the air pollution inside your home can be much worse than the air pollution outside your home. Most people spend 90 percent of their time indoors, whether it be at home, at work, or in a car travelling.

Sources of Indoor Pollution
The sources of indoor air pollution include outside contaminated air, moisture or standing water, heating and air conditioning equipment, personal care products, smoking, cooking, house cleaning products, chemicals released from building products like panelling or carpet, and remodelling a home. Others come in from outside - insecticides, pesticides, dust, airborne particles from products such as car brakes (brake dust), agricultural products and by-products, and many, many more.

Major Indoor Pollutants
The major indoor pollutants include the following:

*    Asbestos is found in many products in the home such as roofing and flooring materials, wall and pipe insulation, spackling compounds, cement, coating materials, heating equipment, and acoustic insulation. Asbestos does not cause any problems unless the asbestos containing material is disturbed, or until it disintegrates with age.

Health effects associated with asbestos include scarring of the lung tissue, lung cancer, chest cancer, and abdominal cancer.

*    Biological pollutants found in most homes include animal dander, cockroaches, dust mites, mildew, moulds, plants, bacteria, and viruses.

Watery eyes, runny nose and sneezing, nasal congestion, itching, coughing, wheezing and difficulty breathing, headaches, and fatigue are all symptoms associated with biological pollutants.

*    Carbon dioxide is a colourless, odourless gas somewhat heavier than air, most commonly generated by respiration, cooking heating systems, and wood stoves.
It can deprive tissues of oxygen and some loss of mental acuity has been noted.

*    Carbon monoxide comes from gas appliances, fireplaces, and wood and coal stoves that are not properly maintained or ventilated as well as burning charcoal, running gasoline engines in enclosed spaces, invented kerosene heaters, and tobacco smoke. It is a colourless, odourless, highly poisonous gas.

The health effects of carbon monoxide can include fatigue, drowsiness, headaches, confusion, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, dimmed vision, shortness of breath, and in some instances, severe heart and brain damage or even death.

*    Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is a major source of indoor air contaminants because it contains carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and many other gases and particles. Inhalation of ETS is often termed second-hand smoking.

The effects on health include headache, conjunctival irritation, bronchitis, nasal congestion, increased incidences of asthma in children, changes to the body's immune system, lowered defences against inhaled particles, and lung cancer.

*    Formaldehyde can be found in particle board, fibreboard, and plywood panelling resins; glues, dyes, permanent press clothes, markers, paints, carpet backing, upholstery, and drapery fabric. It can be released into the air by burning wood, kerosene or natural gas, by automobiles, and by cigarettes. It is also used as a strong disinfectant and as a preservative in some paints, coatings, and cosmetics.

Exposure to this colourless, pungent gas can irritate the eyes, nose and throat; cause headaches, dizziness, lethargy, rashes, nausea, and irritation of the upper respiratory tract.

*    Nitrogen dioxide in the home can come from outside sources as well as gas appliances, fireplaces, and wood or coal stoves that are not properly maintained or ventilated.

Nitrogen dioxide, a colourless, highly poisonous gas, in the home may cause eye irritation and respiratory problems.

*    Radon gas comes from uranium containing soil surrounding the house. It can enter the home through any openings or cracks in the foundation floors, walls, drains, or joints.

Exposure to radon gas can result in lung cancer.

*    Volatile organic compounds (VOC's) are found in many household cleaning agents, personal care products, pesticides, paints, hobby products, dry cleaning, aerosol sprays, adhesives, and solvents.

The fumes from these toxic household chemicals can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, allergic reactions, eye irritation, skin irritation, respiratory tract irritation, visual disorders, and memory impairment.

Preventative Steps
There are ways to reduce the air pollution in your home. One of the best ways is to make sure the heating and air conditioning systems are well maintained and the filters changed frequently. Good maintenance and ventilation are keys in keeping indoor air pollution under control. This includes gas appliances, wood stoves, and fireplaces.

Moisture control is also another factor in reducing air pollution. Moulds, mildews, and dust mites like moist places.

Keep the use of products that contain volatile organic compounds to a minimum. Always follow instructions when using these products. They should always be used in a well ventilated area.

Air treatment systems, commercially available are ideal to purify the air. Look for Hepa filtration or Hepa-like filtration in your air treatment system. This is the type of filtration used in operating theatres and they remove everything (well 99.9% of everything). You have to remember however, air treatment systems take out toxins, but do not put oxygen back into the air - fresh air is the only way to keep oxygen levels high and so, don't forget to open the windows occasionally, even and maybe especially during the cold winter months.

Of course you need to remember that your skin is breathing and particles which are small enough will be absorbed by your skin - so the less of the nasty toxins there are in the air the less is absorbed by your skin.

The antioxidants in your natural skin care products such as Vitamin E and C will help to neutralize at least some of the toxins absorbed by your skin. Anitoxidents should also be taken as supplements to help the body eliminate free radicals and detoxify. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and drink plenty of pure water.

What's in the water you drink?

Consider this for just a moment - we should all be drinking at least 3 litres of water a day. Water makes up 90% of our body. So, do you give the quality of drinking water any regard? If so, how can you make sure that what you drink is H2O and not H2 O plus a hundred or so other chemicals that are not supposed to be in there.....

Well, the following information will give you some idea of what has been found in drinking water - depending on which country you live the water from your tap may or may not be of higher quality, however, Australia is considered to have good drinking water - here's what is considered to be acceptable in our drinking water 'downunder':
  • Aluminium sulfate
  • Ammonia (ammonium hydroxide)
  • Ammonium sulfate
  • Calcium hydroxide
  • Calcium hypochlorite
  • Calcium oxide
  • Calcium/sodium poly-phosphate silicate
  • Carbon, powdered activated
  • Chlorine
  • Copper sulfate
  • Ferric chloride
  • Ferric sulfate
  • Hydrofluorosilicic acid (Fluorosilicic acid)
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Magnetite
  • Polyaluminium chloride
  • Polydimethyldiallyl ammonium chloride
  • Polyacrylamides and acrylic acid (polymers and copolymers)
  • Potassium permanganate
  • Silver hydrogen peroxide
  • Sodium alginate
  • Sodium aluminate
  • Sodium bicarbonate
  • Sodium carbonate
  • Sodium chloride
  • Sodium fluoride
  • Sodium fluorosilicate (Sodium silicofluoride)
  • Sodium hexametaphosphate
  • Sodium hydroxide
  • Sodium hypochlorite
  • Sodium silicate
  • Sulphuric acid
  • Zinc ortho-phosphate
The very first chemical in the above list is Aluminium. There is scientific evidence, that Aluminium is linked to Alzheimer's Disease....

If you have ever wondered why there is such an astounding increase in Alzheimer's disease, the answer may have finally been found. In the April 1995 issue of the international science journal, Neurotoxicology, a private Australian research group reported that the widespread use of aluminium salts to purify water may lead to brain damage and may account for the large scale loss of memory experienced by people suffering from Alzheimer's disease!

The Australia Institute of Biomedical Research, based in Sydney, reported that experiments with rats showed that tiny amounts of aluminium consumed in water found its way to their brains and accumulated there. It has been known for twenty years that if aluminium accumulated in the brain over a period of time, it could kill off neurons and cause memory loss.

Institute researcher Judie Walton noted the worldwide massive increase in Alzheimer's disease over the past 70 years. She pointed out: "We are drinking it and eating it throughout our lifetimes, so by the time we are quite old we have had a lot of exposure to aluminium." Aluminium is also found in food emulsifiers, anti-perspirant deodorants, baking powder, some toothpastes, and many of the commonly used cooking utensils.

The research on rats found measurable amounts of aluminium in their brains after just one glass of aluminium treated water. Walton observed: "We really should look seriously at revisiting this possibility that aluminium addition to foods and drinking water is a health hazard." Due to the concerns about a link between aluminium and Alzheimer's disease, Sydney, Australia's largest city, is already gradually withdrawing aluminium treatment of water.

Using aluminium to purify water may be even more dangerous than the use of fluoride and chlorine in our water. It is believed that the problem is worsened by the action of fluoride in facilitating the absorption of aluminium.

I won't even start talking about Silver, and the many other chemicals lists, which are known to have potential adverse health effects. The other consideration is that the list above does not include viruses, bacteria and other living (or parts of dead) organisms that are found in our dinning water. It only lists 'acceptable' substances.

What about microbial Pathogens?
There are also microbes in our drinking water. Microbial Pathogens. Pathogens in drinking water are serious health risks. Pathogens are disease producing micro-organisms, which include bacteria (such as giardia lamblia), viruses, and parasites. They get into drinking water when the water source is contaminated by sewage and animal waste, or when wells are improperly sealed and constructed.

They can cause gastroenteritis, salmonella infection, dysentery, shigellosis, hepatitis, and giardiasis (a gastrointestinal infection causing diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and gas). The presence of coliform bacteria, which is generally a harmless bacteria, may indicate other contamination to the drinking water system.

People worry the most about potentially toxic chemicals and metals in water. Only a few of the toxic organic chemicals that occur drinking water are regulated by drinking water standards. This group of contaminants includes:
  • Trihalomethanes (THMs), which are formed when chlorine in treated drinking water combines with naturally occurring organic matter.
  • Pesticides , including herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides.
  • Volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), which include solvents, degreasers, adhesives, gasoline additives, and fuels additives. Some of the common VOCs are: benzene, trichloroethylene (TCE), styrene, toluene, and vinyl chloride. Possible chronic health effects include cancer, central nervous system disorders, liver and kidney damage, reproductive disorders, and birth defects.

These contaminants include toxic metals like arsenic, barium, chromium, lead, mercury, and silver. These metals can get into your drinking water from natural sources, industrial processes, and the materials used in your plumbing system. Toxic metals are regulated in public water supplies because they can cause acute poisoning, cancer, and other health effects.

Nitrate is another inorganic contaminant. The nitrate in mineral deposits, fertilizers, sewage, and animal wastes can contaminate water. Nitrate has been associated with "blue baby syndrome'' in infants.

Radioactive Elements.
Radon is a radioactive contaminant that results from the decay of uranium in soils and rocks. It is usually more of a health concern when it enters a home as a soil gas than when it occurs in water supplies. Radon in air is associated with lung cancer.

Well, does this get you thinking - it certainly makes us think before we drink. There are however some very effective water treatment systems and purification processes. Good quality systems range from Reverse Osmosis based systems to combination systems which even include ultraviolet light, which kills most if not all pathogens.

A good water purification system is an investment everyone should seriously consider. Alternatively, you can buy water, but that works out very expensive in the long run.

Well, that was just a 'little' information for you to consider and think about...We hope you found the information informative and useful and look forward to brining you the December Issue (probably in late November)

In good health

Danny & Susan
Too many people don't consider health an asset until they get sick and suffer from ill-health.

Good health is precious and should not be jeopardized, at any cost.

The older we get the more precious our health becomes - once it's gone, it is very difficult to get back...

Air Pollution

It may not be released in your town, but some where in the World - the winds will ultimately deliver it to your nose.

Circulation of air around the World will bring air particles released in one hemisphere to the other. Remember Chernobyl....

Global Air Circulation

The curls in this cartoon show vertical circulation. Air rises near the equator, where it is hottest, and sinks near the poles, where it is cooler. However, instead of a circulating in a single loop in each hemisphere, the motion divides into three cells in the northern and three in the sourthern hemisphere. There is a region of falling air at about 30 degrees latitude, north and south, and of sinking air at 50-60 degrees latitude.

The other arrows show winds at the surface. The wind does not blow straight north or south between the bands of rising or falling air; Coriolis effect bends winds to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern. This gives the winds as shown.

Wouln't want to drink that, would you...

Water is supposed to be made up of Hydrogen and Oxygen in a 2:1 ratio.
The List in the centre of the page sure includes a few other things...

How much water does the human body actually contain?

A figure of 90% is often mentioned, but 90% of what?

90% is high. Within single cells, water content ranges between 70 and
85%.  The percent water in the entire body by weight varies with age, sex,
and physical conditioning.  Heart and lung contain the most water, about
80%.  Fat (about 20%) and bone (about 43%) are among the
lowest.  Therefore, the total body is an average of all organs, blood, and
extracellular fluids.  Several physiology texts place average young men at
60% water, and young women at 50% water, the difference due to relatively
more fat in females.  Thus, a 70 kg young man has about 42 kg (or 42
liters) or water.  With age fat increases and muscle decreases, so that in
old age the body may contain only 45% water.  Infants, by contrast, average
73% or more.
