Lemon (Citrus limomum)

Another member of the Rutaceae family, the distinctive and famous Lemon tree can be found in most climatic zones except for extremely dry areas. The light yellow to clear essential oil is extracted from the peel of the lemon fruit by cold pressing.

Uses in Natural Skin Care Products:
Lemon is used in natural skin care to cleanse, tone and refresh oily skin types. The actions of Lemon are similar to those of Grapefruit in that it also tightens puffy skin, reduces enlarged pores and helps to disperse pockets of accumulated fluid and impurities. It is also used in toning lotions and blends for skin conditions that resemble the peel of the fruit itself.

Traditional Medicinal Uses:
Lemon has been used to relieve sore throat and has a reputation as a preventative against infection and as a cleanser of the Immune and Lymphatic Systems. Lemon is reputed to help digestion of fats and oils and in the absorption of dietary iron. Many other properties have been attributed to Lemon Oil, among these it is said to prevent cardio-vascular conditions.

The essential oil of Lemon contains approximately 95% terpenes (pinene, limonene, phelandrene, camphene, sesquiterpenes), linalol, acetates of linalyl and geranyl, citral and citronellal (6 to 8%), aldehydes and a camphor of lemon.
