Introduction
Transparent gel from the pulp of the meaty leaves of Aloe vera has been used topically for thousands of years to treat wounds, skin infections, burns, and numerous other dermatologic conditions. Dried latex from the inner lining of the leaf has traditionally been used as an oral laxative. There is strong scientific evidence in support of the laxative properties of aloe latex, based on the well-established cathartic properties of anthroquinone glycosides (found in aloe latex). However, aloe's therapeutic value compared with other approaches to constipation remains unclear. There is promising preliminary support from laboratory, animal, and human studies that topical aloe gel has immunomodulatory properties which may improve wound healing and skin inflammation.

ALOE VERA GELAloe Vera Plant
Aloe is a member of the Lily family (Liliaceae). Originally a native of South Africa, Aloes are now naturalised to the Mediterranean region and the West Indies and is grown commercially world-wide. Aloe is a succulent plant with thick and fleshy leaves that contain the famous Aloe juice. The juice is collected from the leaves after they are cut and is thickened into its better known gel form either by passive evaporation or boiling. There are many different varieties of Aloe, each having a specific use and producing juices with differing properties. In herbal medicine Aloes has been used internally in extract form for the relief of constipation in sedentary and phlegmatic constitutions types and also as a general bowel ‘cleanser’. The clear gel form of Aloe is used externally to relieve irritation and inflammation of the skin, for its almost miraculous wound healing properties and for its toning effects.
