Clary Sage

Botanical Name: Salvia sclarea

Family: Labiatae

Clary sage is a good oil to use as a general tonic, like Juniper and common sage. Its tonic effects apply particularly to the nerves, stomach, kidneys, and uterus. Its effect on the nervous sistem is sedative, anticonvulsive, and tonic.

Clary sage is a relative of Dalmatian Sage (Salvia officinalis), Common Sage (Salvia lavandulifolia), Basil, Thyme and Marjoram, being a member of the Labiateae Family. It is different from the other Sages in a number of respects but most notably it is distinguished from the others by its crimson-red and grey foliage.

Uses in Natural Skin Care Products:

As Clary Sage is reputed to contain phyto-hormones with estrogen-like properties it is favoured as an ‘anti-aging’ factor in skin care preparations and can be found in the Wildcrafted Age Defying Essence It is good for puffiness of the skin and fluid retention with tonic and soothing properties.

Uses in Traditional Medicine:

Clary Sage has a traditional use where there is a strong mind-body relationship (psycho-soma) and where hormonally based symptoms are present, for example, where depression and anxiety affect digestion, sex drive and blood pressure and for menopausal imbalances.

In Massage and Bath Oils Clary Sage is very uplifting and is known to produce euphoria and joyful feelings. It is also recommended to aid in convalescence after illness of any kind. It has been added to Wildcrafted’s Luxurious Massage oil Blend.

Amenorrhoea, Boils, Colic, Convulsions, Depression, Dysmenorrhoea, Dyspepsia, Flatulence, Frigidity, Hypertension, Hysteria, Impotence, Kidney disorders, Leucorrhoea, Neurasthenia, Ophthalmia, Skin care, Throat infections, Ulcers, Whooping cough (Tisserand, 1992).
