Golden Rod Biological Name: Solidago virgaurea Family: Compositae Other Names: Golden Rod Parts Used: Dried aerial parts Active Compounds: Saponins based on polygalic acid Clerodane diterpenes, including solidagolactones I-VII and elongatolides C & E Phenolic glucosides, including leicarposide Flavonoids such as rutin and quercitin Miscellaneous; acetylenes, cinnamates, hydroxybenzoates, polysaccharides, phenolic acids and tannins. Traditional Applications in Herbal Medicine: Anti-catarrhal, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, aromatic, astringent, diaphoretic, carminative, diuretic, stimulant. Golden Rod is useful for the treatment of upper respiratory catarrh, whether acute or chronic. It may be used in combination with other herbs in the treatment of influenza. Also used for the treatment of flatulent dyspepsia. As an anti-inflammatory urinary antiseptic, Golden Rod may be used in cystitis, urethritis and the like. It is used to promote the healing of wounds. Golden Rod is astringent, diuretic and effective in the treatment for stone in the bladder. It is recorded that in 1788 a boy of ten, after taking the infusion for some months, passed quantities of gravel, fifteen large stones weighing up to 1 1/4 OZ., and fifty over the size of a pea. It allays sickness due to weak digestion. As a gargle it can be used in laryngitis and pharyngitis. Combinations : For upper respiratory catarrh Goldenroot is often used with Eyebright, Elder, Echinacea, Poke Root and Wild Indigo. Infusion: pour a cup of boiling water onto 2-3 teaspoonfuls of the dried herb and leave to infuse for 10-15 minutes. This should be drunk 3 times a day. Tincture: take 2-4 ml 3 times a day.
