Mesothelioma - Cancer from Asbestos

Mesothelioma is becoming more and more recognised as workers all over the world are developing lung cancer from exposure to asbestos fibres during the past decades. James Hardie, an Australian building supplies company has featured strongly in the news and has now agreed to some compensation for its workers after much debate and legal wrangling.

The problem from asbestos is however not just confined to the past. It is expected that new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed and subsequent compensation claims made for another 35 - 40 years.

In the 1960s, workers began receiving news about the dangers of working around asbestos and the devastating cancer called Mesothelioma that it can produce in the lungs and other internal organs. This cancer of the cells most frequently found along the lining of the lungs is still extremely deadly today. Also, in spite efforts by law enforcers, workers are not always notified of their potential exposure to free-flying or contained asbestos at the workplace.

The United States is actively working to reduce exposure to airborne asbestos in the workplace. However, other countries continue to use hazardous forms of asbestos in products that are imported into this country. Compounding the problems of asbestos is the fact that asbestos-containing building materials were used extensively in the 1960's and 1970's. Many homes and schools that were built during that time period show high levels of airborne asbestos.

Once asbestos is airborne, your chances of getting an asbestos disease like Mesothelioma are greatly increased. Unfortunately, this disease's signs and symptoms don't appear overnight. It takes some time for the Mesothelioma, a protective membrane or sac that coats the outside of your internal organs. The most common Mesothelioma cells that become cancerous as result of inhaling asbestos are associated with the lungs. The next location that can develop Mesothelioma is the outer tissue of the abdomen.

While people of any age can be stricken with Mesothelioma, the cancer typically occurs 30 to 50 years after the exposure to asbestos. Unfortunately the early symptoms of Mesothelioma are not remarkable or unique. Symptoms may include routine occurrences such as a persistent cough, constipation or fever. Other symptoms may be weight loss, chest pain, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, and stomach pain and swelling, all depending upon the type of Mesothelioma that the person has.

Mesothelioma comes in three common forms: peritoneal (affecting the stomach first), pleural (affecting the lungs first), and pericardial (affecting the heart area). Treatment of each type of Mesothelioma depends on the stage of the cancer and condition of the patient.

Treatments for this serious cancer include surgery to remove cancerous areas plus aggressive chemotherapy and radiation. It is imperative that people with Mesothelioma seek aggressive treatment as the life expectancy of a Mesothelioma patient may be as little as six months.

Treatment for Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is not a cancer that is treated easily and sufferers generally experience decreasing quality of life as this cancer progresses.

The focus of treatment is to provide quality of life. With this in mind, the combination of orthodox and traditional (complimentary) medicine has much to offer. Depending on the type of mesothelioma (pleural or peritoneal) the signs and symptoms will differ as will the medical intervention, however, focusing on the quality of life and using therapies such as Acupuncture, herbal medicine, meditation, massage and other forms of treatment can provide some symptom relief for patients suffering from this form of cancer.

In addition, traditional medicine can help considerably with managing the side effects from chemotherapy. In particular Chinese medicine and western herbal medicine are particularly apt at reducing the severity of side effects and helping with pain management. In addition Homeopathy has been known to provide good results, as have Ayurvedic medicine and meditation.
