Brain - How to keep it from ageing

Natural Skin Care Products by Wildcrafted Herbal Products

Introduction

When Alzheimer's was first identified by German physician, Alois Alzheimer, in 1906, it was considered a rare disorder. Today, with one in 10 persons over age 65, and nearly half of persons over age 85, affected, Alzheimer's disease is recognized as the most common cause of dementia (a disorder in which mental functions deteriorate and breakdown). Alzheimer's disease is distinguished from other forms of dementia by characteristic changes in the brain that are visible only upon microscopic examination during autopsy.

There is much we can do however to keep our brains active, alert by engaging in new and stimulating activities which will help to prevent (to some extent) the premature slowing down of our brain's functions.

Aging of the Brain Can Be Slowed Down

There are many inconveniences associated with an aging brain. Indeed, it is one of the greatest fears many of us have. When our brains age, we run the risk of diseases like Alzheimer's. Additionally, just the ability to remember slowly starts to slip away. Happily, however, with modern medical science, we have learned a great deal about the way the brain ages, as well as things we can do to slow that aging process down.

Keeping the body healthy is one way that aging can be slowed in the brain. This is because our physical health and our mental health are connected together. When we make efforts to get physical exercise, we help our bodies remain fit longer, and we also contribute to the health of our brains.

In addition to physical exercises that we commonly think of (going for walks, gardening, etc.) there are other exercises that are especially designed to help the physical and the mental remain in tandem. Yoga and Tai Chi are ancient Eastern exercise programs that focus especially on the mind-body connection. Additionally, there are plenty of variations of these exercises for all skill levels.

However, physical exercise alone is not enough for slowing down the aging process of the brain. Some exercises are a must for keeping the brain healthy like reading. Any kind of reading helps; even light reading e.g. novels. But, to keep the brain alert and young, you must at least occasionally read up on serious subjects as well.

Another way to exercise the brain is to solve crossword puzzles. They help you think about and recall information, and this is an excellent way to give the brain some essential stimulation. Word games like the jumble and anagrams are also helpful in slowing brain aging. It is a good idea to play games like memory with your grandchildren and have pots of fun as well.

Proper rest for the brain is essential for a brain that is aging. Years of inadequate sleep can add up to stress your brain in later years. Getting a good night's sleep on most nights will help your brain rest and recover from the day's work. Sleep has also been shown to be helpful in allowing the brain to sort through the information it received that day, helping you better prepare for the next day.

The elevated plane of rest is meditation. It does not necessarily involve sitting in a funny posture and contemplating the deep meanings of life and the universe. It simply means to consciously slow down without falling asleep and watching things without preconceived notions. It helps to reduce tension by putting things in perspective, even though you do not aim at achieving an empty mind. Meditation helps the brain function more efficiently.

The aging process is a natural phenomenon and it affects the brain. So, you must take steps to avoid the loss of its faculties as early as possible. You can greatly reduce the effects of aging on your brain by keeping it active, giving it proper rest, and taking care of yourself while you are still young. The best time to begin taking care of brain is now. Remember, the earlier you start, the longer you will enjoy it.
