There is a growing concern about potentially harmful chemicals present in the skin and personal care products we buy regularly from our favourite supermarket or department store. As research into this area increases, more and more potentially harmful chemicals are exposed and put in question. It's time we took a closer look at natural skin and personal care products.
Are You Putting Your Health At Risk by Using 'Natural' skin care products?
Natural skin care is not just the application of good quality, natural skin care products. No, it is much more than that. Natural skin care incorporates not only natural skin care products, but it also requires a different approach to how you take care of your whole body.
Over the past 12 months or so, I’ve written several articles on the importance of pH, water, and other factors that influence the health and appearance of your skin. Factors such as the types of food you eat, exposure to excessive sunlight, the use of commercial soaps and so on. All these factors play a part in the health and well being of your skin.
We also looked at the inclusion of synthetic and artificial ingredients and how these can potentially cause you more harm than good. Even government regulations, in some countries, are being reviewed to exclude some of these ingredients from commercially available skin care products.
Much of this information has been communicated not just through our website and in our Natural Skin Care Newsletter, but is widely discussed in the media. Despite all this information being available, only a small percentage of people are actually taking this information seriously enough to investigate their products and review the ingredients contained in their skin care products. It would seem, that packaging, marketing and advertising override the importance of the quality of the ingredients, or their potential health dangers.
We at Wildcrafted Herbal Products are passionate about providing only the best quality natural skin care products and advice. Our range of products has evolved over 20 years from within our natural therapies clinic. Our patients were the sole reason for the development of our natural skin and body care range of products. Not because we saw a gap in the market and a growing demand for natural skin care products that were truly natural and did not contain any potentially harmful chemicals, but because these types of products simply did not exist and our patients required treatment of their skin problems.
Today, many manufacturers have become aware of the growing concern in the general public about potentially harmful chemicals being added to their food, drinks and other daily consumed products, including skin care.
The word Natural has become a buzzword in the skin care industry and its use implies that a product is natural and does not contain potentially harmful chemicals. Unfortunately this could not be further from the truth. Many so called ‘Natural’ products, and I’ll restrict myself to the natural skin care market, do contain potentially harmful chemicals such as preservatives, emulsifiers, artificial colours, etc., together with one or more natural ingredient such as essential oils or herbal extracts.
Unfortunately the inclusion of an essential oil or a herbal extract in an otherwise non-natural base, this does not translate into a natural skin care product. All it means is that in addition to all the other ingredients in a product, there are also one or two, many be more, natural ingredients. In my opinion, this is misleading and boarders on false advertising.
For example an article published by the Chemical & Engineering News (http://pubs.acs.org/cen/coverstory/83/8346specialtychem3.html), reports findings of breast cancer related to the use of parabens in skin care products. In fact, they report, and I quote:
As I have stated earlier, many manufacturers of natural skin care products, but not all, use chemicals such as parabens in their bases as preservatives and do not necessarily indicate this on their labels.
Now take a look at the ingredients list on your shampoo, conditioner, cosmetics and skin care products and see if you are putting yourself at risk. If in doubt, ring the manufacturer and ask them what preservatives, etc., they do use and what ingredients are in their products additional to the ones they list on the labels.
Often there is little room on labels to list all the ingredients and it is an accepted practice to just list the active ingredients in a particular product. For example, most if not all pharmaceutical products, will only lists the active ingredient on the packaging not what the base substance of the pill, tablet or liquid consists of.
But as a consumer of natural skin care products, I would want to know exactly what I am putting on my skin, wouldn't you?
