We all know about Goal setting, don't we?
New year resolutions are probably on the agenda for many of us and we all have the best intentions to follow them through, but how often do we carry our intentions through beyond the first few weeks?
One of the problems is usually that the intentions, such as 'I will give up smoking', are great intentions, but they are only intentions, not goals and desires we really want to achieve.
In order to have any hope in fulfilling an aim, we firstly need to have a goal that is set in concrete and we need to make a plan in order to achieve the desired goal. Without a plan, there really is no chance for a goal to come to fruition - it's just another wish.
So, we set our goal of giving up smoking in concrete and the only way to have a good chance of achieving this goal is to WRITE IT DOWN & PUT A DATE BY WHICH YOU'LL HAVE ACHIEVED IT NEXT TO IT. Write it in the present tense - as if you had already achieved it. Pin it up someplace you can see it every day and read it to your self at least once a day.
Next you have to have a plan which is well thought through and actually has a chance of getting you to your goal. This sounds easy enough, but often life throws us curve balls and we quickly loose site of the plan and the goal(s).
A plan also has to be flexible. This is why you should draw up your plan in sand... But set you goal in concrete - sand is movable and therefore this implies flexibility. So, now you have to be able to set a plan up so that it has a chance of getting you to the ulimate achievement of your goal. How do you do that?
Well, first you need to consider what is possible. For example is it possible to just give up the smokes and never think of or want another cigarette? Probably not. So, how can you do it? What plans can you make to avoid slipping back into the habit of having that smoke?
Probably the best way to undertake such a task is to ask yourself - Why do I really want to quit? If you just think you should because every body tells you that it's no good for you, then you will probably not quit. The only way you will be able to not smoke is if you have a very strong, powerful reason not to. And YOU have to BELIEVE that it is IMPORTANT TO YOU. It has to be a "Must attain, or else", otherwise you will not quit.
This is not just applicable to smoking, but any goal or strong desire you may have, to achieve something. One of the best ways to bring something into focus is to read up about it. So if you want to get fit, or quite smoking or develop a better diet or lifestyle, or what ever it may be - read about it. Read about what smoking can do to your body, read about the chemicals which are added to the tobacco, what they do to you, how they could affect your health... etc. That way you start getting a strong mental picture of what you are dealing with, which can build up a conviction, a need to change that something because .... and you will by now have found some strong reasons why.
In the case of smoking there is a mountain of information that will tell you it will kill you. If extending your life is important to you, than that may be a good enough reason and motivation to help you quit - But, and this is a big BUT, if this is not of concern to you - you need to find a reason that is. Otherwise the motivation is not strong enough to help you resist at times of temptation to pick up a cigarette and have a smoke.
Think about it from this point of view. Most people, when asked "Do you make all the money you would like to make", say "No". However, the same people are rarely prepared to do what it takes to achieve this. They find reasons why they can't do This or That even though they can see that if they did, it would make them more money and they would achieve that aim.
The reason they are not willing to do the This or That is very simple. They have not got a buring desire or a burning need to have this extra money, quit smoking, have a healthier life style etc. - they get by without it. It would be 'too much of an effort' to have to do the This or That in order to get it.
Just look at many of the wealthy folk - they all say in their respective autobiographies that they just had to have This or That and they could not go to sleep without thinking about achieving it. They talk about how an idea consumed them and they did not care about anything else. It was do or die. That is the sort of desire or goal one has to have in order to change things.
Someone once said - if nothing changes, nothing changes... If you want something to change, you have to change things - this is not as simple as it sounds and this is where the need for a powerful reason to change is necessary.
So if you are thinking about a new year's resolution, keep this in mind and think about the WHY you want to change things before you make your resolution - may be if you can find a strong enough reason as to why your resolution is a matter of life and death to you, then you'll be able to fulfill your goal and feel all the better for it.
From "Life's Little Instruction Book" by H. Jackson Brown Jr.
Never give up on anybody. Miracles happen every day.
Be brave. Even if you're not, pretend to be. No one can tell the difference.
The difference between looking nervous and excitement is a smile.
Forget the Joneses
Think big thoughts, but relish small pleasures.
Smile a lot. It costs nothing and is beyond price.
Learn to listen. Opportunity sometimes knocks very softly.
Never deprive someone of hope; it might be all they have.
When starting out, don't worry about not having enough money. Limited funds are a blessing, not a curse. Nothing encourages creative thinking in quite the same way.
Be kinder than necessary
Become the most positive and enthusiastic person you know.
Commit yourself to constant self-improvement.
Don't major in minor things.
Leave everything a little better than you found it.
Judge your success by the degree that you're enjoying peace, health and love.
Never underestimate the power of love.
Live your life as an exclamation, not an explanation.
Never waste an opportunity to tell someone you love them.
Take charge of your attitude. Don't let someone else choose it for you.
