Simple As Breathing?
Asthma can be a life-threateningly serious health condition. It's important to manage it safely. You never know when an attack might happen. Sometimes they mean you only miss school or work. At other times, a fast trip to the Emergency Room is required to get your breathing back under control.
Recognizing the signals of an impending asthma attack can and must be learned. There are specific things that can trigger attacks. When you remember to look for these, you have a much better chance of good asthma management and attack prevention.
Night time is the most frequent time of day for an asthma attack. This is because lying down can constrict our breathing passages. Sleeping in a slightly raised position can help tremendously. Increasing our medication, under our doctor's advice, can help. Dehumidifiers are great for the bedroom. They remove moisture from the air. Even moving to a drier climate may be a good idea if you can do it.
You probably already have some sort of medication regime you follow daily. One particularly great, fairly new medication, Advair, actually allows the swollen bronchia to reduce their inflammation! Flonase, which you squirt up your nose, reduces the effects of allergens. Nearly every asthma sufferer carries an Albuterol inhaler at all times. Medications are also good for pre-treating if you'll be doing heavy exercise or for emergency use as needed if wheezing starts unexpectedly. In an actual attack situation, you can get by until you get to the Emergency Room or to your doctor, or until paramedics show up to assist.
Most asthmatics have allergies and many people with allergies have asthma. Airborne allergens are the most common. These include tobacco smoke, pet dander, pollen, mold and most of all, dust. It is vitally important not to be a smoker, not to mention avoiding other people's second- hand smoke. The number one irritant is tobacco smoke. It leads to more asthma attacks than anything else!
You can develop contingency plans for most possible situations. Your life depends on it. Plot your normal peak flow readings and work your plan around this and your activities. Pharmacies carry peak flow meters you can buy. Blow hard into one of these 3 times to measure your strength of breath and get a baseline value that is your norm.
When you know what your own good reading is, you can figure out what readings are indications of dangerous breathing levels. There are three reading zones: red, yellow and green. Red means "get yourself to the emergency room now!" Yellow means to increase your medication and watch your exposure to your triggers. Green is a good reading. Ask your doctor about prescribing a nebulizer for home use.
A nebulizer makes it possible to treat yourself at home if you have a severe attack of coughing and wheezing. This is especially good for keeping you from having to drive to the emergency room at 3 am! It's wise to see an allergist and even a pulmonary specialist if you have a more severe case of asthma. Unfortunately, asthma can easily turn into pneumonia. Get your breathing capability and lungs checked at every opportunity and be sure to always have enough prescription medication on hand.
Enlist others so they can be prepared to take you to the hospital or
even to talk to the doctor for you if the attack is so severe that you
cannot speak for yourself. Most people are happy to assist. Planning
ahead can really save your life!
